ESF primary school interviews

We have been given a date 5 days before start of term for our son's interview to an ESF school. What happens about a school place for a non- chinese speaking child if he fails the interview? Or does this never happen?

Doesn't seem to leave you with much room to fix things if they say no, does it? Here's another reader's take on this, but it would be good to get ESF to clarify if you should be arranging a backup plan.
