Hyperlinks in Batgung posts

I've been asked: "Wondering if you can help me with something - have been struggling with how to do hyperlinks in batgung posts."

Let's say you're writing about the weather, and you want to include a link to the Observatory's website. Here are three ways you could do that:

  1. For more information, you can also visit the Observatory's website: http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm
  2. For more information, you can also visit the Observatory's website: http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm
  3. For more information, you can also visit the Observatory's website.

#1 is the most basic - just cut & paste the URL of the web page you want to link to. But if another reader wants to visit the site, they have to copy the URL from this page, and paste it into their browser before they can see that other site.

#2 makes it a bit easier for other readers. Now it is a live link that users can click, to be taken directly to the other site. To do this:

  • First you must be logged in
  • Paste the url into the text, then highlight it. Click the 'Insert/edit link' icon that is shown below the editor window (it looks like three links of chain). In the window that appears, paste the URL into the 'Link URL' field', and click the 'insert' button.

#3 works the same way as #2, but just looks a bit neater. This time, after writing 'Observatory's website', you'd highlight that text. Then, as in #2 you'd click the 'Insert/edit link' icon that is shown below the editor window (it looks like three links of chain). In the window that appears, paste the URL into the 'Link URL' field', and click the 'insert' button.

Hopefully it is straightforward to do, but let me know if you run into any problems.

PS another tip: after highlighting the text you want to turn into a link, you can press the 'ctrl-k' keys instead of clicking the icon. It's a bit quicker.
